Expansion of the Opera Nova. The creation of the IV circle.

It is now certain – the fourth circle of the Nova opera in Bydgoszcz will be carried out by the Warsaw company Budimex. The contract with the company was signed on January 12th. The usable area of the fourth circle is 5730 square meters. The investment will be realized without the use of EU funds.

The contract with Budimex amounts to 114 million (previously it was reported as 95 million). The company is known for other projects in our city, including the revitalization of the Rother Mills and the construction of a multi-level parking lot at Grudziądzka Street, as well as the expansion of Grunwaldzka Street.

Without the help of the Union

The investment will be paid for by the local government of Bydgoszcz and the province. Piotr Całbecki, the marshal of the province, emphasizes that this is one of the few projects carried out without the help of the European Union. In his opinion, the flagship cultural institution in the region is worth it.

Two structures of the new circle

As for the architectural composition, the fourth circle is intended to be connected to the main building of the opera. It will consist of two structures: a cylinder and a cuboid. The cylinder is a historically imposed element, a development of the original architectural concept. The cuboid will be an element containing communication, vectoring the entire space of the circle.

Many solutions for everyone

According to the current documentation of the investment, the fourth circle includes:

– rehearsal rooms with a multifunctional seating arrangement, stage, orchestra pit, trapdoor, and other elements related to the technology of the room (maximum number of viewers – 485 people);

– a multifunctional space expanding the foyer of the main opera building;

– exhibition space and other artistic activities;

– a cinema with very high image and sound parameters (maximum number of viewers – 205 people);

– complementary areas with gastronomic, technical and infrastructure functions, including a viewing terrace overlooking the river, the cathedral, and Mill Island.

A garage with trees on the roof

That’s not all. An architecturally interesting second part of the investment will be the construction of an underground garage from Karmelicka Street. It will provide not only 228 parking spaces but also organize and beautify additional areas of the city of Bydgoszcz. The designers have planned for trees and other vegetation to grow on its roof.

Opera Nova – our pride

Opera Nova was founded in 1956 and nationalized in 1960. It is one of ten opera theaters in the country and the only one in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. It also serves as a Congress Center. The leading bodies of the institution are the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship Self-Government. In addition to opera performances, the repertoire also includes operettas, ballet, and musicals. Opera Nova also fulfills educational functions, conducting ballet and musical studios that introduce children and youth to the world of music and dance.

Currently, the Opera Nova orchestra consists of 68 musicians, and its chief conductor is Maciej Figas, the director of the opera.

28 months for the investment

Budimex teams should enter the construction site in February. The total deadline for the investment is 28 months. The total usable area of the fourth circle will be 5730 square meters, and the new rehearsal room can accommodate 485 people. The cinema will have a maximum capacity of 205 people. The entire fourth circle will have four floors.
